Treasured trunks

If you thought Dumbo had it bad, wait till you see how some of his peers are treated in “An Apology to Elephants” (6 p.m., HBO). Lily Tomlin narrates this documentary that shows how badly some of the world’s smartest animals have been treated over the years.

Always on my mind

Amiable host Jason Silva and magician Apollo Robbins are back for another round of mind-bending “Brain Games” (9 p.m., NGC), must-see viewing for those who like their puzzles served with science.

Cry freedom

In “Rectify” (9 p.m., Sundance), Daniel Holden (Aden Young) is released from death row after 20 years and finds himself a stranger in the outside world. It’s from the team behind “Breaking Bad,” which means there’s a strong chance that part of Holden’s recovery will be cooking meth and killing the barista who screws up his latte order.
