PHOENIX - The months since the deadly Connecticut school shooting have seen dozens of gun buyback events across the country that have taken thousands of guns off the streets for destruction.

But Arizona's Republican-controlled Legislature is now moving to save such guns, crafting a bill that would require local agencies to sell the firearms to gun dealers instead of destroying them.

The move was prompted by a gun buyback event in January in Tucson than angered gun-rights advocates. The city is where a shooting rampage left six dead and wounded then-U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 12 others in 2011.

The bill has passed both chambers of the Legislature and awaits action by Gov. Jan Brewer.

It tightens a 2010 law that requires police to sell seized weapons.
