WILMETTE, Ill. - Robert V. Remini, a prize-winning scholar of Andrew Jackson and the former official historian for the U.S. House of Representatives, has died. He was 91.

In a news release, the University of Illinois at Chicago announced Remini died March 28 at Evanston Hospital after suffering a stroke. Remini was a professor emeritus at the school.

Remini wrote and co-wrote more than 20 books, many of them about Jackson. He was appointed House historian in 2005 and retired in 2010. Remini was openly unhappy with the growing divide between Republicans and Democrats, but was also willing to take sides.

He criticized the war in Iraq and found the Bush administration indifferent to civil liberties.

Remini served as the official historian of the House from 2005 to 2010.
