Another candidate was eliminated today after igniting some more buzz in the afternoon.

Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel reported on Monday evening that USC was in the finishing stages of a deal with Andy Enfield.

The Florida Gulf Coast coach – a Villa 7 alum – had become the target of increased Gophers speculation after ESPN's Andy Katz tweeted that Minnesota, along with USC were going after him.

Some names that could get more life in the coming days:

Tim Floyd (UTEP)
Tad Boyle (Colorado)
Archie Miller (Dayton)
Chris Mooney (Richmond)
Tony Bennett (Virginia)

Gregg Marshall is clearly a surviving fan favorite along with Buzz Williams, but with Wichita State in the Final Four, it limits any possible discussions. Marshall has also turned down big offers in the past, and has made it clear that he values happiness – what do you think he has right now? -- over more money or a step up. I'm not saying it can't happen, but I feel like it would need to be a special situation, and I'm not sure Minnesota is that for him.

Other news from today:

*Texas Tech officially announced on Monday evening that Tubby Smith will be its next hoops coach.

Smith was without a job for just more than a week, and Minnesota is still searching for his replacement.

*Katz also reported that the Gophers had reached out to Cincinnati's Mick Cronin, but he "withdrew from consideration."

*Column from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal's Michael Hunt today: Why would Buzz Williams leave Marquette? He's got it pretty good.
