Update: Texas Tech associate AD Blayne Beal tweeted that news of an agreement with Smith is false. In a phone conversation with the Star Tribune, Beal wouldn't comment as to whether a deal was already in the works.

Former Gophers coach Tubby Smith has found a new job before Minnesota has filled the hole firing him left according to the Associated Press’ Jon Krawczynski.

Krawczynski tweeted on Monday afternoon that Smith has agreed to terms with Texas Tech:

Meanwhile, Minnesota is still looking for a candidate to replace him, embarking on Week 2 of the search.

Smith spent six years as the head coach for the Gophers, compiling a 124-81 record, including 46-62 in the Big Ten. The Gophers were one game removed from Smith's first NCAA tournament victory in his tenure at Minnesota when he was fired. It is unknown whether Smith will take the same staff to Texas Tech.

Ironically, Smith replaces Billy Gillispie at Texas Tech -- the same coach who replaced Smith at Kentucky when he took the Gophers job. Gillispie resigned in September, citing health concerns, and the Red Raiders played the 2012-13 season under interim coach Chris Walker. It will be a rebuilding project for Smith. Texas Tech was 11-20 overall last season, including 3-15 in the Big 12.
