LAGOS, Nigeria - The U.S. says an expatriate has been kidnapped from the West African nation's commercial capital, and is warning Americans in the country to be cautious.
The U.S. consulate general in Lagos issued the security warning Sunday. It says the kidnapping occurred Saturday night in Victoria Island, a part of Lagos where many expatriates live.
It did not give the victim's nationality or other details of the abduction.
Local police could not immediately be reached for comment and national police spokesman Frank Mba said he had not received reports of a kidnapping.
Kidnappings for ransom are common in Nigeria, but most have occurred in its oil-rich southern delta, and Lagos is not considered an abduction hotspot.
Nigeria's Sahelian north is also starting to see kidnappings linked to radical Islamic groups.
