FONTANA, Calif. - While Kyle Busch keeps claiming Nationwide victories, Sam Hornish Jr. is racking up a solid lead among the drivers racing for the series title.
Hornish couldn't catch Busch over the final laps at Fontana on Saturday, scraping the wall with two laps to go while he tried to shave off seconds. He still finished second in his Ford Mustang, giving him 210 points atop the standings heading into a two-week Nationwide break.
Hornish has a healthy 28-point lead over Regan Smith in second place. Although Hornish managed his only victory at Las Vegas, he has five straight top-seven finishes, including second place at Daytona and Fontana.
"It feels really good," Hornish said. "We started off the year the way we wanted to, and have made sure we took care of the car throughout the first five races as well as we could. We wanted to get out of the box good, and I preached that to the team in the offseason."
Hornish finished fourth in the Nationwide race last year.
