The Twins and Yankees are about to throw down here in Tampa, but several veterans got their work in on other fields in Florida.

Mike Pelfrey threw five innings in Sarasota for Class AAA Rochester. He gave up five runs on seven hits and no walks, three strikeouts and two home runs. Joe Mauer caught him and was 1-for-2. Mauer is trying to get familiar with the new members of the rotation before the e regular season starts.

Josh Willingham, Jamey Carroll, Ryan Doumit and Justin Morneau all got two at-bats in a minor league game at the Lee County Sports Complex.

Third baseman Trevor Plouffe played five innings in a minor league game. His right calf appears to be ready to go so Plouffe is expected to be in the Twins lineup tomorrow night.

Glen Perkins threw a scoreless inning on the minor league side as well, getting three strikeouts.

Many eyes here have been on young Miguel Sano today as he is scheduled to start at third tonight. He might play all nine innings tonight, and manager Ron Gardenhire said  Sano will be brought in for another spring training game before camp ends.

Sano showed his inexperience at third base, booting a couple of grounders during batting practice. His arm, however, is strong and true. And he gave a few pitches a ride during batting practice. One ball hit halfway up the scoreboard in left. Another hit halfway up the batter's eye in center.

Robinson Cano is back from the World Baseball Classic and is at second tonight. Sano spotted him from the dugout and ran over to kiss the ring.

The Yankees have a few proven hitters in their lineup tonight. Liam Hendriks can boost his stock with a strong effort against them.
