It's official: main Gophers' target Gavin Schilling is going elsewhere, leaving Minnesota scrambling for some frontcourt depth for the coming season.

Schilling announced his decision to attend Michigan State on Twitter on Wednesday, after building up the moment for a week after he visited Villanova, the last of his short list of schools. The big man had previously narrowed his list of preferred schools to four, which also included Minnesota and UCLA.

"I proudly announce that I will be playing my college basketball at Michigan State University! Much love to all who supported me! #GoGreen." Schilling tweeted

The Gophers have been high on Schilling for quite some time and have gone after the Findlay Prep star aggressively this season. Minnesota signed former teammates Alvin Ellis and Alex Foster in the fall period.

Schilling, a 6-9, 205-pound three-star recruit according to Rivals.com is a strong presence down low, though he still needs to refine his shot.

With Schilling off the board, the Gophers' options for a third recruit for the 2013-14 are rapidly thinning. Ellis will probably play shooting guard, and Foster is a wing, but with seniors Trevor Mbakwe and Rodney Williams both departing after the season, along with Andre Ingram, the Gophers are in desperate need of some big men to help the team regroup in that area. They will have Elliott Eliason, Mo Walker and Charles Buggs, who redshirted this season.

Without many other bigs available right now, there is a chance the Gophers could look to junior colleges for their final scholarship.

Minnesota will have four scholarships available for the coming season, but will likely save one for the loaded 2014 class.
