South arts briefs: Prior Lake to paint umbrellas for Lakefront Days

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Lakefront Days, the city of Prior Lake will host a new event called Lakefront Shades, a custom umbrella show and auction. Artists are invited to paint a nine-foot umbrella for display throughout June and July.
The Prior Lake Arts Council will judge the finished works and award three cash prizes. Thirty umbrellas are available to decorate between now and May 31. The umbrellas will be sold in a silent auction on Aug. 8, with proceeds to benefit charity.

Model trains to toot at Eagan Civic Arena
The Great River Valley System Model Train Club and Choo Choo Bob’s Train Store will hold the Great Minnesota Train Expo at the Eagan Civic Arena this weekend, with displays, vendors and dealers on hand, along with entertainment for children. Admission is $5 and children under age 8 are free. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Eagan Civic Arena, 3870 Pilot Knob Road.
