St. Thomas beats Calvin by one to finish season unbeaten at home

Noah Kaiser’s three-point field goal with 1 minute, 13 second left broke a tie and helped St. Thomas edge visiting Calvin 63-62 on Saturday in the third round of the NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament.

Calvin’s Bryan Powell, who scored a game-high 31 points, made two free throws with 55 seconds to cut the Tommies’ lead to one point. Calvin of Michigan (26-4) was ranked No. 12. Will DeBerg led St. Thomas, who are 17-0 at home this season, with 16 points.

The top-ranked Tommies (28-1) advance to the Division III quarterfinals, which will be played in Salem, Va. The Tommies will play No. 8 Williams(26-4) on Friday. Williams defeated Virginia Wesleyan 84-75 in its third-round game.

MSU Mankato 81, Arkansas Tech 65: Jarvis Williams scored 19 points and Connor O’Brien scored 17 to lead the host Mavericks past the Wonder Boys on Saturday in the NCAA Division II Central Regional quarterfinals. Assem Marei had 12 points and 12 rebounds for MSU Mankato (27-4). Jared Williamson scored 27 for Arkansas Tech (18-12). The Mavericks will play Harding, which beat Central Missouri 75-71, in Sunday’s semifinals.

Winona State 70, Northeaster State 57: Clayton Vette, the Central Regional player of the year, scored 18 points and had eight rebounds to lead the Warriors (25-7) over Northeastern State in the upper-bracket quarterfinals of the Central Regional. Xavier Humphrey also had a big game for Winona State with 15 points, six on two huge three-pointers in the second half. The Warriors will play Augustana in the semifinals.

Augustana 79, Upper Iowa 65: Cameron McCaffrey had 23 points and seven assists to lead the Vikings to the quarterfinal victory in Mankato. Alex Richter contributed 18 points for the Vikings (22-8). Bo Pagel scored 19 to lead the Peacocks (20-12).

Women

Augustana 68, Southwestern Oklahoma 64: Faith Tinklenberg scored 16 points to help the Vikings (26-6) rally past the Bulldogs in the NCAA Division II Central Regional semifinals in Topeka, Kansas. Augustana trailed by six points at halftime.

The Vikings will play Emporia State, which beat Minnesota State Mankato 68-67, in Monday’s title game.
