Minnesota scene: Dorniden makes it to semis

Heather Dorniden advanced to the semifinals in the 800-meter run Wednesday at the NCAA track and field championships in Des Moines.

Minnesota's Dorniden finished fourth in a time of 2 minutes, 6.27 seconds. The 800-meter semifinal will be run today.

Minnesota's Jamie Cheever advanced to the final in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Cheever ran a time of 10:18.87, finishing fifth in her heat and qualifying for Friday night's final.

U freshman Hassan Mead advanced to the men's 5,000 final. Mead recorded a time of 14:31.07 to place fifth and qualify for the final. The U's Chris Rombough finished with a time of 14:44.78.


• North Dakota hockey defenseman Joe Finley of Edina said he will return for his senior season. The WCHA leader last season in plus-minus rating was a first-round draft pick of the Washington Capitals. Finley led the Fighting Sioux in plus-minus the past two seasons and led the league with a plus-24 rating as a junior.

• Hamline named Robert Beeman athletic director. Beeman, who has been the athletic director at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., the past three years, replaces Dan O'Brien, who resigned to accept a position on Gophers football coach Tim Brewster's staff.
