Letter of the Day (March 11): Mediterranean diet

  • March 10, 2013 - 10:10 PM

Now that the New England Journal of Medicine has determined that the Mediterranean diet (high in fish and nuts) is the healthiest for our hearts, perhaps a good follow-up article will shed light on how the average American is supposed to fit this into his or her grocery budget. Three meals of fish per week? Have you seen the price of fish lately? Or nuts, for that matter?

Actually, I have a better suggestion for a follow-up article. Why are U.S. farm subsidies skewed in such a way that floods our shelves with cheap products jammed full of high-fructose corn syrup that only add to our society’s health woes, when those same tax dollars could instead go toward establishing and developing sustainable aquaculture that could consistently put more safe, affordable and healthy fish on our dinner tables?
