BURNSVILLE

Potters needed to 'throw' bowlsThe Burnsville School District is looking for experienced potters to throw bowls on a wheel as part of its "Empty Bowls for Full Bellies" event.

Participants can drop in as their schedule allows between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday at Burnsville High School, 600 E. Hwy. 13, in the school's clay lab (Room H108). Parking will be available in the staff parking lot on the northwest side of the building. Food, beverages and treats will be provided.

The creations will be sold at the April 18 Empty Bowls event with proceeds supporting Brainpower in a Backpack, a Burnsville High School volunteer project that provides weekend food to local elementary schoolchildren who might otherwise go hungry.

By participating, potters will help create 600 bowls and raise more than $10,000 to benefit children.

SOUTH METRO

Chick Evans caddie scholarships awardedFourteen high school seniors from Minnesota, including two with ties to Dakota County, have been awarded Chick Evans caddie scholarships for full tuition and housing at the University of Minnesota.

The two winners with south-metro ties are Philip Allessi of Stillwater, who attends St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights, and Micah Dalluge of Burnsville, who attends Minnesota Connections Academy.

Chick Evans scholars are golf caddies selected based on four criteria: a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.

The students were awarded the scholarship to the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities, where they will live in the Evans Scholarship House. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years and is valued at more than $70,000.

The scholarships are awarded by the Western Golf Association in Golf, Ill., which has overseen the program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930. It is among the nation's largest privately funded scholarship programs.

Currently, 835 caddies are enrolled in colleges across the nation as Evans Scholars, including 61 from the University of Minnesota. More than 9,600 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars -- including 606 from the University of Minnesota -- since the program was begun by amateur golfer Charles "Chick" Evans Jr.
