There are laughs aplenty about preppy-looking Mormons in a Ugandan village in "The Book of Mormon." But members of the cast are switching tone for a serious matter. They are collecting toiletries to for local charities this Valentine's Day. They are seeking the help of patrons and do-gooders.
The effort is being spear-headed by cast members Phyre Hawkins and Kimberly Marable on behalf of the service organization Broadway Serves! Hawkins memorably plays a “Lion King”-style character at the beginning of “Mormon” while Marable plays a variety of African roles.
Both “Mormon” company members will be accepting unused travel-sized soaps, lotions, shampoos, deodorants, etc., at the stage door of the Orpheum Theatre, 910 Hennepin Av. S., Minneapolis, from 6:15-7 p.m. Thursday. Additional drop times are available by email (firstname.lastname@example.org). Toiletries will be delivered to charities on Friday.
The organization unites "Broadway and theater professionals to become more actively involved in the global community by way of community service," said Marable. She added that its an awesome cause.
