An SUV crossed an interstate median in southwestern Minnesota and struck a car heading the other way, killing a 6-year-old in the smaller vehicle and leaving another child and two adults in critical condition, authorities said.

The crash occurred Saturday evening on Interstate 90 a few miles west of Worthington, the State Patrol said Sunday. Road conditions were described as icy at the time.

Killed was Jonah Holmes, 6, of Iowa, the patrol said. Critically hurt in the car were driver Kevin B. Bakker, 44, and Michelle N. Holmes, 27, both of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Fisher Bakker, an infant, also from Iowa, the patrol said.

The westbound SUV, driven by James G. Fisher, 30, of Luverne, Minn., went through the median about 6:40 p.m. Saturday and hit the eastbound car broadside, the patrol said. Fisher was treated for injuries at the scene and released.

All passengers were wearing proper restraint devices, the patrol said, and alcohol use was not considered a factor in the crash.
