If you’re going to see Lucinda Williams at the Dakota, arrive on time to catch the Kenneth Brian Band.
Well, it’s a stripped down version of these Alabama Southern rockers. But Brian, who has a ZZ Top starter kit beard and a suitable Billy Gibbons flair with the electric guitar, is a talented dude in a Jamey Johnson kind of alt-country way. Moreover, Brian and members of his band, including fiddler Lillie Mae Rische, sit in with Lucinda at various points, adding much needed depth and dynamics.
As for Lucinda, her Friday set was a bit disappointing, as my review indicated. She chatted more about the business of music instead of the creating of it. And her set list left something to be desired. (Personally, I always long for “Righteously.”)
Here is what she and Doug Pettibone played on Friday:
Lake Charles/ Side of the Road/ People Talkin’/ The Night’s Too Long/ Jackson/ Crescent City/ Bus to Baton Rouge/ When I Look at the World (new song)/ Make the World Go Away (Hank Cochran)/ Jailhouse Tears/ Concrete & Barbed Wire/ Pineola/ Something Wicked This Way Comes (new)/ Hard Time Killing Floor Blues (Skip James)/ Real Live Bleeding Fingers & Broken Guitar Strings/ Change the Locks (Tom Petty)/ Joy ENCORE Nothin in Ramblin (Memphis Minnie)/ Jambalaya (Hank Williams)/ Get Right with God (with four members of Kenneth Brian Band)
