U.S. junior speedskating nationals set for OVAL

The U.S. junior speedskating championships will be Friday through Sunday at the Guidant John Rose OVAL in Roseville. Several local skaters will be among the competitors seeking national titles and spots on the U.S. team headed for the world junior speedskating championships later this month in Collalbo, Italy.

Among top Twin Cities skaters competing will be Steven Hartman of Falcon Heights, an all-around favorite, and Kyle Ronchak of Arden Hills, a contender for the sprint title. Racing begins at 12:55 p.m. Friday and at 8:55 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.

Moore's team loses in China

Maya Moore's Shanxi team lost 99-86 to Zhejiang on Thursday in the second game of the best-of-five Chinese Women's Basketball Association Finals. The series is tied 1-1 now.

Moore, an all-star forward for the Lynx during the WNBA season, had 36 points, nine rebounds, seven steals, six assists and three blocks. She played all 40 minutes. Liz Cambage, a 6-8 center for Tulsa in the summer, had 45 points and 17 rebounds.

•Registration for the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon and six other running events hosted by Twin Cities In Motion will open online at tcmevents.org at 8 a.m. Saturday.

•Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve will receive a special merit award on Wednesday at the Minnesota State Capitol Rotunda during Nationals Girls and Women in Sport Day ceremonies.

•Gophers men's and women's swimming and diving head coach Kelly Kremer was named an assistant coach for the U.S. men's team that will compete in the 2013 World University Games from July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. Two of his swimmers, juniors Kyler Van Swol and Derek Toomey, are on the team.

• Hamline named Jim Weyandt its baseball coach on Thursday. Weyandt, a Pipers assistant coach the past nine seasons, replaces Jason Verdugo, who gave up his coaching duties when he became the Hamline athletic director.
