The family of fired Minnesota Senate aide Michael Brodkorb says he's doing better after crashing his sport utility vehicle on a highway near St. Paul.

Brodkorb's wife, Sarah, issued a statement Friday saying his condition has improved.

The statement thanks everyone for their "concern, warm thoughts and prayers" and asks for privacy.

Michael Brodkorb was taken to Regions Hospital in critical condition after crashing on Interstate 35E Wednesday night. He was alone in the SUV. A state trooper smelled alcohol on Brodkorb's breath.

Brodkorb was a communications aide to Senate Republicans. He was fired in 2011 after an affair with then-Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch (kohk). He is suing the state, alleging he was a victim of discrimination because of his gender.
