Repeat misuse of state databases is prompting two state lawmakers to try making sensitive information more secure.

Sen. Scott Dibble, a Minneapolis Democrat, and Rep. Mary Liz Holberg, a Republican from Lakeville, plan to unveil a bill Wednesday to curb the misuse.

It's illegal to access drivers' license data without a government purpose, but investigations have found that misuse is common. Several public employees and agencies have been disciplined for it in the past year.

Most recently, the Department of Natural Resources discovered an employee had accessed driving records of about 5,000 Minnesotans. The legislative auditor is investigating, and the employee no longer works at the DNR.
