Several east metro agencies were recognized Saturday for their work with the Karen community.
The 10 organizations were honored for helping Karen immigrants resettle, said Nay Htoo, vice chair of the Karen Community of Minnesota.
The following agencies received plaques of recognition at the Karen New Year held Saturday at Johnson High School in St. Paul: Roseville police, Roseville Area Schools, St. Paul police, St. Paul Public Schools, World Relief Minnesota, Minnesota Council of Churches, Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Service, International Institute of Minnesota and HealthEast Roselawn Clinic.
"They have done an incredible job," said Saw Morrison, program manager of the Karen Organization of Minnesota.
Karen immigrants fled religious and ethnic persecution in Myanmar. About 7,200 Karen live in the metro area. There are an estimated 1,600 Karen students in St. Paul schools, and about 600 in Roseville.
