WABASHA, MINN. - A Waba-sha citizens group is appealing a conditional-use permit for a frac sand loading facility.

The "Friends of Wabasha" filed the appeal with the City Planning Commission on Mon- day in an effort to block a permit granted last month to Superior Sand Systems.

The permit allows Superior Sands to build a station for loading silica sand onto trains headed to North Dakota and Texas for use in the oil and gas extraction process called hydraulic fracturing. The sand would be trucked in from western Wisconsin.

The permit allows as many as 250 trucks to enter and exit Wabasha each day.

KAGE Radio reported that the group claims the permit was issued without a commission assessment of the loading facility's effects on traffic, tourism and nearby St. Elizabeth's Hospital, as well as on another business.
