California dreamin'

Based on a couple past conversations, Bill Paxton seems to be ideal company for an evening, especially since he's gone through the trouble of bringing along some underrated movies. The "Big Love" star is TCM's curator for a night, introducing gems like 1974's "California Split" (11:30 p.m.) and 1973's "The Last Detail" (1:30 a.m.).

'Good' news

The last time NBC slipped a minority into a lead role on a crime drama (in "Undercovers"), it practically shouted it from the rooftops. But "Deception" (9 p.m. KARE, Ch. 11), starring the racially mixed Meagan Good as a San Francisco police officer, isn't getting nearly the attention 2010's quickly canceled "Undercovers" got. Let's hope the low-key strategy pays off.

Movin' on up

Jennifer Aniston and No Doubt are on hand to help "Jimmy Kimmel Live" (11 p.m. KSTP, Ch. 5) celebrate its new earlier time slot. In most of the country, Kimmel will take on Jay Leno and David Letterman directly, but KSTP will continue with an hour of late-night local news, which means Twin Cities residents can still watch opening monologues from the competition and still catch all of Kimmel's show.
