Nim Chimpsky, with Laura Ann Petitto, is the subject of the documentary "Project Nim."

TV picks for Dec. 20

X marks its spot

The 2012 winner of "The X Factor" (7 p.m., KMSP, Ch. 9) is revealed, which means this is the last chance of the season for Khloe Kardashian to have a fashion slip, Britney Spears to do her impression of a little lost girl and Simon Cowell to crawl off into a corner and cry.

Goodbye to the shore

Snooki & Co. do their part for superstorm Sandy victims by finally abandoning "Jersey Shore" (9 p.m., MTV), the once-charming but ultimately obnoxious reality show that turned intoxicated, untalented youngsters into big stars. The episode is followed by a live reunion with the cast, hosted by the very brave Amy Paffrath.

Monkey see, monkey do

The Oscar-winning team behind "Man on Wire" has gone to the apes. "Project Nim" (8 p.m., HBO) documents the adventures of Nim Chimpsky, an ape smart enough to communicate like a human child, but not smart enough to avoid the finale of "Jersey Shore."
