It's time to play the music

Only Kermit & Co. could bring together Whoopi Goldberg, David Arquette, John Cusack, William H. Macy and Carson Daly for 2002's "It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie" (7 p.m., WUCW, Ch. 29). Nice guest list, but it will never match the sight of Orson Welles in the original "Muppet Movie." Local filmmaker Peter Myers takes us for a stroll down one of our most historic streets in "University Avenue: One Street, a Thousand Dreams" (8 p.m., KTCA, Ch. 2), a new documentary narrated by Penumbra Theatre founder Lou Bellamy.

Sports night

Bryant Gumbel seems more interested in playing golf these days than doing a daily talk show. That's his prerogative, but if I ran a network, I'd pull up the money truck to try to get him to change his mind. Gumbel is at his best each year when he brings together correspondents for "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel" (9 p.m., HBO) for an annual roundup.
