FARGO, N.D. - A new $15 million clinic has opened in Fargo to serve the area's uninsured and underinsured.

Officials scheduled an open house Friday at the Family HealthCare Center, which saw its patient population swell from 6,600 to 12,000 in about five years. It's the only federally designated community health care center in North Dakota and western Minnesota.

The Forum newspaper reports ( that the new clinic has 33 exam rooms, more than triple the number in the old clinic. Space has more than doubled to 56,000 square feet. The clinic is expected to handle at least 40,000 patient visits in its first year.

The project was paid for primarily through a $6.6 million federal stimulus grant in 2009 and tax credits. The clinic still needs $1 million and is seeking donations.
