BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Victor Oladipo and Will Sheehey both scored 14 points to lead No. 1 Indiana to an 87-51 win over Coppin State on Saturday night.
The top-ranked Hoosiers (8-0) overcame poor shooting at the start of the game and pulled away from the Eagles (1-6). Indiana missed its first nine shots and didn't take the lead until Christian Watford's 3-pointer with 9:25 left in the first half.
That gave Indiana a 14-11 lead, and the Hoosiers never trailed again. Watford and Remy Abell both added 10 points to the winning effort as Indiana recovered from its early shooting woes and finished 31 of 60 (51.7 percent) from the field.
Coppin State (1-6), playing its first game ever against the nation's top-ranked team, showed little stage fright. The Eagles fell to 1-48 against ranked teams and 0-25 in games against Big Ten opponents.
Taariq Cephas led Coppin State with 13 points, and Michael Murray had 9 points and 12 rebounds, marking his sixth straight game with double-digit rebounds.
Coppin State entered play Saturday tied for eighth nationally with 12 steals per game, but the Eagles were outdone by the Hoosiers 11-10 in that category.
The Eagles still led 9-2 before the Hoosiers found their shooting touch. Indiana's first two points came on Cody Zeller's free throws.
Zeller, a preseason AP All-American, was held to nine points and seven rebounds in one of the lowest-scoring games of his career.
Even with Zeller held in check, the Hoosiers were too much for the Eagles in the second half. Indiana shot 21-of-34 (62 percent) after halftime.
Indiana led 33-19 at halftime, but Coppin State closed within 37-28 after Patrick Cole made two free throws. A 3-pointer by Jordan Hulls put Indiana ahead 40-28, and the Eagles didn't get any closer.
