Brandon Roy's comeback from retirement will at least be delayed.

The Oregonian newspaper's Jason Quick -- who covered Roy during his years in Portland and was in town last week to preview Roy's return to Portland Friday -- reported late tonight that Roy will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee this week.

The surgery will be the seventh knee surgery of his career, dating to his high school days.

And of course, it means he won't make his big return to the Rose Garden on Friday.

No word yet on how long he'll be sidelined, or what the odds are that he might never play again.

Roy hasn't played since leaving a Nov. 9 game against Indiana after aggravating a knee injury he originally banged in the preseason finale against Milwaukee.

The Wolves had gone very silent on his knees in the last few days. After practice today, Rick Adelman said he had no idea if Roy would play Wednesday.

Roy hoped to return last Wednesday against Charlotte but didn't, citing the fact that the Wolves didn't practice Tuesday after playing in Dallas the night before. He wanted a good practice behind him before he tried playing again, but didn't practice Thursday or play Friday, either.

When asked about his right knee last week, he said, "Of course, I'm concerned with it being a knee. If it was an ankle, you have to deal with it accordingly. Since it is my knee, we all know they're not 100 percent, so anytime you have something in that area, it's always a little concerning. I try not to think about it that much. Coach and the team always tell me to take my time. Nobody is putting any extra pressure on me."

Asked if he expected such obstacles in his way during this comeback, he said, "Honestly, I tried not to think about it much. Talking with Coach and David (Kahn), they said they expected it. I tried not to think about it. I just tried to prepare and not worry about it that much. They seemed as if they were prepared for some nicks and bumps. Again, that's why they haven't put any pressure on me."
