SANTIAGO, Chile - The granddaughter of the Chilean president ousted by the military coup that led to the Pinochet dictatorship has conceded defeated in a mayoral election but says she'll stay in politics.

Maya Fernandez Allende lost the mayor's race in the Nunoa district of Santiago by 30 votes in a recount announced Tuesday. Initial results had put Allende ahead last month.

She says she will now step down as a Nunoa local council member but plans to run for Congress.

The 41-year-old Allende spent her childhood in Cuba, where her mother lived in exile after Marxist President Salvador Allende killed himself during Gen. Augusto Pinochet's 1973 coup.
