Southwest football coach Biezuns resigns

  • November 13, 2012 - 6:18 AM

Coming off one of the best seasons in program history, Minneapolis Southwest football coach John Biezuns has resigned, calling it "a personal matter" Monday.

The Lakers (8-2, 5-1 City Conference) nearly dethroned Washburn as 10-time City Conference champions and won a playoff game for the first time since 1990. They were 20-9 with a share of the 2010 conference title in three seasons under Biezuns, who will retain his job as an elementary teacher within the Minneapolis Public Schools.

Southwest athletic director Ryan Lamberty had no comment on Biezuns' unexpected departure.

The Gophers' Micaella Riche was named Big Ten women's basketball player of the week, the first such award of her career. The 6-2 junior averaged 24.5 points and 10 rebounds in two victories in the Best Buy Classic this weekend, shooting 68 percent from the floor.
