SHIFTING GEARS: China's auto sales rebounded in October, but Japanese brands suffered amid a territorial dispute between Beijing and Tokyo.

DISPUTE-DRIVEN: Sales of Japanese vehicles plunged in September as the dispute between Beijing and Tokyo over a group of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea prompted buyers to avoid Japanese showrooms.

U.S. MODELS ACCELERATE: sales of GM-brand vehicles rose 14.3 percent from a year earlier to 251,812. sales of Ford-brand vehicles rose 48 percent to 60,518, and sales so far this year ARE up 14 percent from the same period in 2011.
