Sign-up begins next week for a nine-day canoeing and kayaking adventure next spring in the St. Croix River basin. The 2013 Paddle Namekagon will explore 92 miles of the Namekagon River in western Wisconsin to the place where it meets the St. Croix.

The canoe and kayak trek will begin May 18 in Cable, Wis., and end May 24 at the Riverside Landing near Danbury, Wis.

The Namekagon River is part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, a national park.

Portions of the river are primitive and remote. Other reaches run wider and slower and flow through more populated areas.

The St. Croix River Association will haul overnight gear, offer shuttle service from Danbury to where the paddle begins in Cable and supply kitchen equipment for anyone wanting to cook evening meals.

Registered participants will participate in educational events along the route.
