Dance spotlight: 'From Baroque to Beatboxing'

  • October 27, 2012 - 5:01 PM

FROM BAROQUE TO BEATBOXING

Saturday: It's the first offering in the 2012-13 MacPhail Spotlight Series. And as the title suggests, this evening has a bit of everything old and new as it showcases the intimate, centuries-old relationship between movement and music. One highlight is the premiere of "Standing on the Hollow," an original work based on a Flannery O'Connor short story with music by Julie Johnson (flute) and choreography by Tamara Ober. Also on tap is an intriguing collaboration of cellist Jacqueline Ultan, beatboxer Carnage the Executioner, guitarist Mike Michel and break dancers J-Sun (pictured) and Dancin' Dave. Plus performances from musicians Jeff Lambert, Bryan Nichols, James Buckley and Miguel Hurtado. There will be a Q & A session at 7 p.m. with Johnson and Ober. (8 p.m. Sat. $15-$20. MacPhail Center for Music, Antonello Hall, 501 S. 2nd St., Mpls. 612-767-5250, or www.macphail.org.)
