Supporters of a proposed photo ID constitutional amendment are joining the battle on the airwaves over the state's election system.

A spokesman for, which is organizing support for the amendment, said a television ad featuring a World War II veteran has been running on cable TV and is beginning to run on broadcast outlets.

The speaker in the ad, Capt. Robert McWhite, describes being shot down over Germany during World War II and being held as a prisoner of war. "I know first-hand the cost of defending America and our democracy," he says.

"The right to vote is central to our way of life, and it should be protected and treated with the dignity it deserves," McWhite says in one of the spots.

The group opposing the amendment, Our Vote Our Future, has begun running a broadcast ad with former Secretary of State Joan Growe.
