Fans are sending out a tall stack of get-well wishes to Gary Louris, who has canceled six weeks’ worth of solo tour dates due to undisclosed medical reasons. A message on the Jayhawks co-leader’s website and Facebook page appeared Tuesday citing a “health concern requiring immediate attention.” Word from a friend is the matter is private but nothing catastrophic. It did require quick attention, though, and a long recovery through at least the end of November, when his tour was supposed to wrap in England. Here’s the rest of the statement from his management:
“He sends his heartfelt apologies for any inconvenience or disappointment -- canceling shows is not a decision taken lightly but his health is the first priority right now. Gary plans to get back on the road as soon as possible -- he has loved sharing his songs over the past month and wants to thank everyone who's joined in. But for now, we appreciate your understanding and support.”
Louris, 57, previously had to cancel a month of Jayhawks dates in 2003 due to pericarditis, an infection around the heart. He had only just wrapped another year and a half of steady touring with the Jayhawks last month, and he was obviously raring to return to his solo career. He only got about two weeks into the fall trek, though. Set lists included songs from throughout the Jayhawks discography, plus some Golden Smog nuggets, tunes off his 2008 solo album “Vagabonds,” plus some Big Star and other assorted Louris Inc. covers.
