Led by Erik Van Rooyen's tie for fifth place, the Gophers men's golf team took sixth in the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic in South Bend, Ind. The Gophers moved up two spots from Monday in the 12-team event by finishing with a 54-hole total of 880, their best score of the season.

Michigan State won the tournament with an 869, and North Carolina-Wilmington's Thomas Bass was medalist at 211. Van Rooyen closed with a 72 and a 216 total. Other Gophers finishers were: David Haley Jr. (tie for 21st at 220), Jon DuToit (tie for 28th at 222), Alex Gaugert (tie for 51st at 229) and Robert Bell (69th at 235).

Etc.• Minnesota Stars FC defender Kyle Altman has been named to the 2012 North American Soccer League Best XI team. Altmann, the Stars' captain, is the first Minnesota representative to be selected to the 11-person team. The 11-person team is chosen by a vote of coaches of the eight teams in the league.

• The Minnesota Swarm announced it has re-signed transition player Andrew Watt to a one-year deal. For the second consecutive year, Watt tied for the National Lacrosse League lead with four shorthanded goals. The Kitchener, Ontario, native also ranked fifth in the league with 21 forced turnovers.
