A day after police shot and killed a Richfield man, a family member said Saturday that he will be remembered as "a very good guy."

Jeff O'Connor, 25, had lived at his aunt's house for nearly two years and was in the home Friday morning when police were called to the Richfield rambler for a domestic disturbance and crisis situation involving a man with a knife.

Police arrived at the 6600 block of Park Avenue S. and shot and killed O'Connor. On Saturday, police declined to give details, name those involved or say what prompted the shooting; it remains under investigation by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. A county spokeswoman said details aren't expected to be released until next week at the earliest.

In Richfield, the droves of emergency vehicles, crowds of onlookers and yards of yellow police tape that cut off most of the block Friday were gone Saturday.

At the home, O'Connor's aunt, Kathy Brockmeier, confirmed O'Connor's identity and said his parents and brother were just beginning to cope with the loss. "He was a gentle, kind young man," she said. "He was a very good guy, and we all loved him very much."

O'Connor had "some issues" recently, she said, but declined to elaborate. He had attended Groves Academy, a St. Louis Park private school for students with learning disabilities and attention disorders, and had been working part-time.

"He had a potentially bright future," Brockmeier said. "It's just a waste."
