The Gophers women's hockey team netted three power-play goals in a 4-minute, 12-second span of the first period and defeated St. Cloud State 7-1 in its WCHA opener Friday night at Ridder Arena.

Maryanne Menefee opened the scoring for the Gophers (4-0) at 11:06 of the first period. Man-advantage goals by Sarah Davis and Amanda Kessel made it 3-0 with 4:48 left in the period. Kessel scored twice and recorded two assists.

Etc.The Gophers men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the season at Michigan, where the women won 196-99 and the men lost 170-124.
