King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden begin their Minnesota visit today with a private tour of the new Nelson Cultural Center at the American Swedish Institute.
The best opportunities to glimpse their majesties likely will be on Friday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., which they'll visit as part of the school's 150th anniversary celebration. While most events are ticketed (and at capacity), there will be a public processional along Eckman Mall to Christ Chapel at 10:20 a.m. Then the king and queen will help dedicate the Sesquicentennial Plaza and sculpture on campus at 2 p.m. before moving to other ticketed events.
On Saturday, they will visit the governor's residence in St. Paul at 9:30 a.m., where visitors often may be viewed walking from the drive to the mansion entrance.
At 2 p.m., the Nelson Cultural Central will be dedicated in an outdoor ceremony, although only ticketed visitors will be allowed on campus. A live stream of the dedication will be on the institute website starting at 2 p.m. (www.asimn.org). The king and queen conclude their day, and their visit, with an evening gala at the Hilton Minneapolis.
