Kaia Grobe of Chanhassen and Mary Warren of Hartland (Wis.) Arrowhead took turns one-upping each other in 50-yard freestyle performances during the Gold Division competition at Saturday's Maroon and Gold Invitational at the University of Minnesota.

Grobe, a sophomore and the defending state Class 2A 50-yard freestyle champion, posted a speedy time of 23.48 in the anchor leg of the 200 medley relay, .05 better than Warren.

Chanhassen finished second in the race.

Warren got the better of Grobe not long after, winning the individual 50 freestyle in a time of 23.74. Grobe was second with a time of 23.90.

Eden Prairie won the Gold Division with a team score of 411.

Orono honors former kickerAt halftime of Thursday's 4-0 victory over Glencoe-Silver Lake, the Orono boys' soccer team retired the number 15, which was worn by former player Colton Gleason.

Gleason, a 2010 graduate and kicker on the football team, was killed in an assault while visiting friends in St. Cloud last week.

Buffalo fetes stingy '52 teamBuffalo is adding a little more history to the traditional festivities when it hosts Moorhead on Friday in the school's homecoming game.

The school will be honoring the 60th anniversary of one of the greatest teams in school history. In attendance will be 15 members of the 1952 Wright County Conference champions, a team that went 7-0-1 and did not give up a point.

All of the members of the 1952 team will be recognized at a pregame tailgate dinner. Those in attendance will be escorted onto the field by members of the current Bison team and be introduced before the game. The captains of the 1952 team will take part in the pregame coin toss.

The Eagles (No. 4, Class 3A), played at Chanhassen (No. 9, 3A) Tuesday. They will host Wayzata (No. 2, 3A) Thursday, play at Hopkins (No. 5, 3A) on Oct. 9 and take part in the tough Eastview Invitational on Oct. 11 and 12. They finish up their regular season with another battle against Wayzata on Oct. 16.
