It's been Frederick Manfred's 100th birthday all year, with celebrations in his adopted, beloved southwestern corner of the state -- in Luverne, Minn., and at Blue Mounds State Park. And now the bittersweet celebration -- bittersweet because Manfred, of course, died in 1994 -- moves to Minneapolis.

His life and work will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Elmer Andersen Library with readings and tributes by fellow writers and friends.Robert Bly, James Lenfestey,Peter Campion,Carol Connolly, Bly Pope, and others will read and speak. A short film about Manfred and clips from a second film will be shown.

Frederick Manfred was the author of "Lord Grizzly" and 26 other books. Born in Iowa, he moved to Minnesota and set most of his books in the mythical "Siouxland."

The October event is sponsored by the Loft Literary Center and Friends of the Libraries. "Following the program," the press release states, "a reception will be held including his favorite treat, ice cream, just as he would have wanted it."
