'Refund' scam trolling for bank data

Minnesotans are being warned of a telephone scam that involves calls from people trying to dupe citizens into giving out their bank account numbers.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue said Tuesday that callers say they are from "Alliance" and are working for "Minnesota Internal Service Representatives."

The callers say there is a large refund waiting, but the taxpayer must first provide bank account information, and pay a small penalty. The group also may already know Social Security numbers and other personal information, the Department of Revenue added.

The department said it never charges a fee for sending refunds and does not call taxpayers asking for personal information before sending out refunds.
