Hope Chest holds its first bargain bazaarThe Hope Chest secondhand stores (www.hopechest.us) in Orono and St. Paul are known for top-quality, high-end new and used home furnishings and women's clothing donated by families and retailers. Sometimes donations don't meet the store's quality or theme guidelines, so the breast cancer charity has decided to blow it out with occasional bargain bazaars. The first one is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday ($10 admission), 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday (bag day) at 5806 W. 36th St., St. Louis Park, 952-471-8700). Items include clothing, home accessories, furniture, books and games.

Season for kids' mega salesIt's a garage saler's dream: a one-stop shop for a huge selection of used clothing and toys in excellent condition. Semiannual suburban "mega sales" bring together buyers and sellers of baby equipment, kids' clothes, toys and accessories under one roof. Tens of thousands of items, sized and arranged neatly in sections, are sold at prices far below department stores and a bit above garage sale pricing. This weekend through mid-October, there is a sale every weekend, including in Elk River Thursday through Saturday and in Lakeville Friday and Saturday. Most of the sales ask for customers to bring a nonperishable food item or $1 admission on the first day. Most items are half-price on the last day. For a list of Twin Cities kids' consignment sales each weekend, go to www.mnkidsconsignmentsales.com or www.twincitieskidssales.com and click on "Calendar."
