The Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul is taking over the NT Live series. Filmed productions from the National Theatre in London had been screened in the Guthrie proscenium theater since 2009. They'll now move to the St. Anthony Main movie house across the Mississippi River.

The change was announced as part of a "new partnership" between the Film Society and the Guthrie. It includes the Film Society presenting films "evoked by the Guthrie Theater's stage productions this season," said Susan Smoluchowski, executive director of the Film Society.

As part of that, the Society will show works by auteur David Cronenberg, including "A Dangerous Method," by Christopher Hampton. The Guthrie is presenting several plays by Hampton in a fall festival and he will do a question-and-answer session following that film on Sept. 24.

The series begins with "M. Butterfly," Aug. 26-27, followed by "The Fly," Sept. 2-3, "Videodrome," Sept. 9-10 and "Dead Rivers," Sept. 16-17. The retrospective concludes with Hampton's "Dangerous Method" on Sept 23-24.

The departure of "NT Live" from the Guthrie is the biggest news in the change. Since the series started in July, 2009 with Helen Mirren in "Phedre," there have been 17 screenings at the Guthrie that have attracted nearly 5,000 viewers. That's an average of about 280-290 in the proscenium, which has a capacity of 700. Logistical issues such as setting up a screen and projector (particularly when there is a set in place on the stage) probably weighed in the Guthrie's decision to let the series move to the Film Society.

"To fit this into our schedule was incredibly complicated," said Quinton Skinner, the Guthrie's director of communications.

NT Live will present "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" on Sept. 20. "The Last of the Haussmans" will show on Nov. 1 and "Timon of Athens" is slated for Nov. 15.

The Film Society's St. Anthony Main Theatre is at 115 SE Main St., visible from the Guthrie's endless bridge on the west side of the river.
