The 24-year-old man who was shot and killed on a north Minneapolis porch Friday was identified Saturday by friends and authorities.

The man was identified Saturday as Kalvin White, of Maplewood, by the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

About 2:20 a.m. Friday, police were called to the 3100 block of Dupont Avenue N. after its ShotSpotter system was activated. White, who was shot in the chest, died at the scene.

White had been on the porch when he was shot, said his girlfriend, Ethel Buckingham. She said she had gone in her house to go to sleep Friday when she later heard a loud bang at the door. When she opened it, she found White lying outside the door, Buckingham said. She tried to give him CPR until the police arrived.

White, a business student at Hennepin Technical College, was an aspiring rapper, Buckingham said. "He didn't do anything but go to school and do his music," she said.

White, who was originally from Gary, Ind., came to the Twin Cities several years ago with some of his family, Buckingham said.

State records showed that he had a few run-ins with the law during his time in Minnesota. In 2009, he was convicted of stealing from a purse, simple robbery and possessing a gun. In 2011, he was convicted of domestic assault and interfering with a 911 call. White had just gotten out from behind bars late last year, Buckingham said.

"I believe that everyone can change," K.G. Wilson, of Hope Ministries, said about White. "I'm sad for what happened to this young guy."

Wilson will lead a vigil at 4 p.m. Sunday outside the house where White was shot.
