Minnesota Congressman Erik Paulsen just received a nice shout-out from Working Mother magazine. Paulsen, who represents the state’s Third District, was one of a handful of Republicans, and the only Minnesotan, to be included in the publication’s 2012 “Best of Congress” list of 30 lawmakers lauded for policies supportive of working parents.

“Overall, the 112th Congress... has produced more rancor than bipartisan legislation to promote the well-being of the nation’s families. But these 30 lawmakers have bucked the trend to continue pushing for measures that would help working parents thrive in their jobs and at home,’’ according to the magazine.

The list skews heavily to Democrats. Just eight Republicans were included. Among the lawmakers cited: Sen. Patty Murray, a Washington Democrat, Sen. Herb Kohl, a Wisconsin Democrat, and Texas Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. South Dakota Republican Rep. Kristi Noem also got a nod.

The magazine praised Paulsen for “recognizing the value education and training have for both working families and business.” Working Mother cited Paulsen’s support for the Lifelong Learning Accounts Act of 2011, which would create a portable savings vehicle that allows employers to match workers’ contributions.

The magazine also praised Paulsen’s flexible office hours for his staff and his push for another measure to extend a tax credit for employer contributions to college savings plans.
