The Twins have signed Ryan Doumit for a two-year contract extension that will pay him $3.5 million a year in 2013 and 2014.

It's a good move for the Twins. Doumit is a versatile switch-hitter who makes it easier for Joe Mauer to DH, play first base or get a day off. Doumit enters tonight's game batting .271 with 7 homers and 32 RBI.

Signed as a free agent for $3 million before the season, Doumit had been with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he compiled a .271 average in 611 games.

Here are a few tidbits from the Twins as they prepare to open a three-game series against the Royals at Target Fie

Joe Mauer entered today as the American League leader in on-base percentage at .414...his OBP has not dropped below .400 since May 20 when it was .395.

Ben Revere has 12 multi-hit games in 24 total games played in June...among American Leaguers this month, he is tied for second
in hits (35) with Adrian Beltre, second in stolen bases (11), and 12th in batting average (.337)...lastly, he has struck out just six times in 109 June plate appearances.

Alex Burnett has posted a 1.93 ERA (37.1 ip, 8 er) with opponents batting .216 (29-for-134)...he has not allowed a run in 11 consecutive
appearances (12.2 ip) with four hits allowed, since May 28.

Some other stuff:

First round pick Byron Buxton finally got his first professional hit. He got a single on Thursday during a doubleheader against the Rays rookie team. He entered Friday 1-for-13 in his young career.
