Details: The first free-standing Chick-fil-A quick-serve restaurant in Minnesota has been given the unanimous approval of the Coon Rapids Planning Commission.

The Atlanta-based chain, which boasts $4.1 billion in 2011 sales across more than 1,600 U.S. locations, is preparing to construct its first stand-alone outlet in the state at Coon Rapids' Riverdale Mall on a spot that now holds a Bennigan's restaurant.

Under plans approved by the city commission, the company will purchase and raze the 12-year-old Bennigan's and replace it with a 4,876-square-foot Chick-fil-A, which specializes in boneless chicken breast sandwiches, biscuits and lemonade that are much beloved in many parts of the South.

The 7,100-square-foot Bennigan's was listed for sale last year for $2.2 million.

Chick-fil-A, which earlier this year unveiled a franchised outlet at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport, previously had only two small-scale eateries on college campuses in the state.

The move marks a further northward expansion for the chain, which first entered the Chicago market in 2010. The company says it plans to open 92 new U.S. locations in 2012, including 75 stand-alone restaurants, two mall restaurants and 15 licensed locations.

"Minneapolis has been on our radar for the last couple of years, and this is the culmination of all that work," Jason Hill, Chick-fil-A's development manager, told the Coon Rapids commission at its June 21 meeting.

The facility will have 170 seats, including 28 in an outdoor patio, with a drive-thru window and 69 parking stalls. It will feature a red brick exterior with tan brick accent bands, large windows and raised parapets, according to the plans.
