1000 W. 140th St., Burnsville

Type: Medical Addition size: 35,200 square feet Lot size: 5.65 acres Owner: Twin Cities Orthopedics

Details: Twin Cities Orthopedics, owners of six walk-in urgent care orthopedic clinics, is expanding its same-day surgical center in Burnsville with a 35,200-square-foot, two-story addition on the existing building.

The Burnsville Surgical Center, north of Burnsville Center along McAndrews Road, currently boasts 46,100 square feet. The addition would be on its northwest corner, according to plans submitted to the city.

Planners praised the expansion of "this successful business," and the Burnsville City Council this month unanimously passed a resolution to alter the planned unit development that was established in 2005 to construct the original building.

Vacant land on the western half of the 5.6-acre site that was being held for a possible future sale will be integrated with the first parcel, allowing for the expansion, the plans indicated.

Twin Cities Orthopedics, which specializes in the quickly growing field of sports medicine, said the site will be reconfigured to include more parking for the enlarged facility -- about 341 stalls will be available after the completion of the project.

The addition will be a steel-frame structure, with its second story devoted to an expanded physical therapy clinic to be moved there from the second floor of the existing building. The resulting vacant space in the original building will be remodeled to provide additional room for a walk-in orthopedics clinic, the plans indicated.

The project team includes owner representative BTO Development, Sperides Reiners Architects, civil engineer BKBM Engineers and general contractor RJM Construction.

A call for comment to Twin Cities Orthopedics Administrator Troy Simonson wasn't returned.
