Among the joys of my job as Travel editor, one of the best is hearing from people about their favorite vacation destinations in the state. Minnesota offers so many options, and Minnesotans feel such passion for their summer getaways. I knew that after I asked readers to tell me about their go-to resorts, I'd learn a thing or two.

Or three. Readers also told me about treasures that didn't fit the resort theme. Those tidbits didn't end up in this week's readers-inspired story, but the ideas are worth sharing.

In the realm of B&Bs, two came up. The Whistle Stop Bed and Breakfast in New York Mills, Minn., has turned three train cars and one caboose into Victorian bedrooms. The inn also has rooms in the house (www.whistle stopbedandbreakfast.com). The A.G. Thomson House Bed and Breakfast Inn in Duluth also gets raves -- and not just from readers. It was named the top B&B in the United States in the 2012 Tripadvisor's Travelers' Choice Awards (www.thomsonhouse.biz).

Several readers raved about the town of Grand Marais (www.grandmarais.com). Several others wrote about a unique event that takes places there about twice a month: Michael Monroe Cabin Concerts (www.michaelmonroe.info/lcc.html). The eclectic musician opens up his log cabin home to host concerts. "They're unique even in this unique corner of the state," Craig Peterson of Grand Marais said.

If you missed the opportunity to tell me about your favorite resort, there's a second chance. Send details about your pick to travel@startribune.com, and we'll include it in our online "resort finder," at www.startribune.com/travel.
